Beauty photography is all about the close up details. It’s used to showcase and sell things like makeup, skincare, hair products and jewelry. Not only is it for selling a product, but it’s also a great shoot for creatives showcase a skill set. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a ton of creatives from makeup and special effects artists, eyelash artists and aestheticians who are amazing at what they do and use Beauty shoots to get new content which gets them more work.

Of course it’s not all about business, one of the most essentials parts of beauty is the subject. Whether it’s a seasoned professional model or a person who just wants magazine quality images of themselves in this season of life, you don’t get beauty images without a beautiful person in front of your camera.

Model, Photographer, MUA, Hair Stylist

TIP: What looks good in the mirror doesn’t always look the best once the unforgiving strobe lights of a studio are turned on. Mismatched foundation, a ghostly or cakey look, too long eyelashes that prevent catch lights in the eyes, etc. can all impact the overall finished product. Use a makeup artist (MUA) who’s good at makeup and has some understanding of how makeup will look in different qualities of light. Check out my list of preferred MUA vendors, who are a large part of why my work turns out so well. It’s all about having a skilled team.

We have are literally surrounded by editorial work on a daily basis. Editorial photography is about educating and/or telling a story with your images.

Psst…it could be telling your audience why they need to buy your product.

Editorial shoots have the potential to be a lot more complex than a beauty shoot because, depending on the complexity of the mood board, sometimes they require a larger team and multiple looks (outfits, makeup, hair styles, etc) and all of these looks are tied together by a common theme or element(s) that make it all of the images cohesive. Whatever you can think of could be a theme: polka dots, red, color grading, structure, high-key, low-key, scale, distance, gravity. The next time you get a chance, flip through a magazine and try to see what ties all of the images in a spread together.

Overwhelmed? Don’t be. Editorials can be simple too. It’s all about the vision and the execution.
